Terms of service

The rules for using Dortus apps on Shopify and on the Atlassian Marketplace. Written to be read, not to hide behind.

Last updated: 22 September 2026

1. These terms

These terms are an agreement between you (the organisation that installs or uses the app) and Dortus, an independent software vendor. They cover:

  • Arrears, our app for Shopify business-to-business collections;
  • AskSpace, our question and answer app for Confluence;
  • Mermaid Live Preview, our diagram macro for Confluence.

By installing or using an app, you accept these terms. If you do not accept them, uninstall the app.

2. The platform terms come first

Our apps are distributed through platforms that have their own rules, and those rules sit above ours.

  • For Arrears: Shopify's terms of service, API terms, and merchant agreements apply to your use of Shopify and to apps installed on it.
  • For AskSpace and Mermaid Live Preview: the Atlassian Marketplace terms of use apply, including Atlassian's rules for Forge apps.

Where a platform rule conflicts with these terms, the platform rule wins for that platform.

3. Your account and your data

You keep ownership of your data. You are responsible for the accuracy of what you put into the apps, for who you give access to, and for the messages you send from Arrears to your business contacts.

How we handle data is described in our privacy policy, which forms part of these terms.

4. Acceptable use

You agree not to:

  • use the apps to send unlawful, harassing, or deceptive messages;
  • use Arrears reminders for marketing rather than collecting money you are owed;
  • attempt to break, overload, or reverse engineer the apps or their infrastructure;
  • resell or sublicense the apps without our written agreement;
  • use the apps in breach of applicable law, including debt collection and privacy law.

5. Collections is your decision

Arrears is a tool, not advice. It shows aging, produces statements, sends the reminders you approve, records payments you enter, and applies the credit holds you configure. Dortus is not your accountant, not your lawyer, and not a collections agency. You remain responsible for what you claim, what you write to a customer, and whether a hold is appropriate.

Amounts, aging buckets, and statements are derived from the data in your Shopify store. Always reconcile against your own accounting records before acting on a figure.

6. Plans, trials, and billing

Arrears offers a free plan and paid plans. Paid plans are charged through Shopify billing, and any trial period is granted through Shopify as well. AskSpace and Mermaid Live Preview are billed through the Atlassian Marketplace.

We never collect card details ourselves. Changing or cancelling a subscription happens on the platform that bills you. Refunds follow that platform's policy. If a charge looks wrong, email us and we will help sort it out.

Prices can change. We will announce a price change before it applies to your subscription, through the platform and in release notes.

7. Availability and support

We aim to keep the apps available and working, but we do not offer a formal uptime guarantee. Arrears depends on Shopify APIs and on our hosting provider; the Confluence apps depend on Atlassian's Forge platform. An outage at a platform can make an app unavailable through no fault of either of us.

Support runs by email at dortus.support@gmail.com. We target a first reply within one business day, Monday to Friday. See the support page for what to include.

8. Changes to the apps

We improve the apps continuously, which means screens and behaviour can change. We avoid removing features people rely on. If we do have to remove something material, we will say so in the release notes.

9. Intellectual property

The apps, their code, and their branding remain the property of Dortus. You get a non-exclusive, non-transferable right to use them while your installation is active and your plan is paid. Mermaid Live Preview renders diagrams using the open source Mermaid project, which keeps its own licence.

10. Termination

You can stop at any time by uninstalling the app on the platform. We may suspend or terminate access if these terms are seriously or repeatedly broken, if a platform requires it, or if use of an app threatens the service for others. Deletion of data after termination follows the retention rules in the privacy policy.

11. Warranties and liability

The apps are provided "as is". To the extent permitted by law, we exclude implied warranties of merchantability and fitness for a particular purpose.

To the extent permitted by law, Dortus is not liable for indirect or consequential damage, lost profit, lost revenue, or lost data, and our total liability for any claim is limited to the fees you paid for the app in question during the twelve months before the claim arose. Nothing here limits liability that cannot be limited by law.

12. Governing law

These terms are governed by the law of the Netherlands. Disputes go to the competent Dutch courts, unless mandatory consumer or local law gives you another forum.

13. Changes to these terms

We may update these terms. The "last updated" date at the top changes when we do. Continuing to use an app after a change means you accept the updated terms.
